There was a lively and engaging atmosphere during the activities carried out by EY students of Tunas Unggul at the beginning of April. The learning experience felt different from the usual routine. Parents and students could be seen moving from one area to another, exploring each space together.
In every area, smiles were easily found as they interacted with one another. There were exciting discussions taking place, cheerful stories being shared with great enthusiasm, and moments where parents listened attentively and showed genuine appreciation for what their children were explaining. April 8th and 9th marked a special moment when students took the lead in sharing their learning experiences at school with their parents. This activity is known as the Student-Led Conference (SLC), an approach within the International Baccalaureate (IB) program that provides students with the opportunity to become “leaders” in their own learning process.
In the Student-Led Conference (SLC), students do not only showcase their work, but also share the stories behind their learning journey. Interestingly, this process does not happen instantly. Before the SLC takes place, students go through a variety of meaningful experiences.
They first engage directly in the learning process, explore different activities, and actively participate in classroom explorations. After that, they are encouraged to discuss with one another, share their stories with peers, and reflect on their learning experiences. Through this process, teachers then guide the students in developing their ability to share their stories. The practice is carried out gradually, using methods that are engaging and appropriate for their age—starting from speaking in small groups, trying to explain their ideas to friends, and eventually becoming ready to share with their parents. This process helps students feel more confident because they truly understand what they want to share Parents also play an important role in this moment. By accompanying, listening, and showing appreciation, they help build their children’s confidence. It is clear to see how students become more enthusiastic when they feel heard and valued.
There are also touching moments when parents begin to realize the remarkable growth shown through the simple things their children share. The Student-Led Conference (SLC) also helps develop important skills from an early age, such as confidence, communication skills, responsibility for their own learning, and independence. Through this experience, students learn that their voices matter. They come to understand that every effort they make is something to be proud of.
More than just a school activity, the Student-Led Conference (SLC) serves as a bridge of communication between students, parents, and teachers. Through this event, parents are able to see firsthand how their children learn—not only through the final outcomes, but also through the process behind them. “Let’s continue to support and celebrate every step of our children’s learning journey as they grow into confident and independent learners”.

To develop students spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually which then enables them to adapt and contribute in a global world.
